Fair Trade and President Obama

fair-trade-obamaSo, President Obama is elected, sworn in, got his feet under the desk and has started passing laws.  He certainly has a great deal to contend with and I cannot imagine the height of his in-tray.  I hope he is good with paperwork.

I cannot help but wish him well.  The problems he faces are not just enormous they are also growing each day.  Who would want to sort out the economic difficulties faced by the USA?  He will have some challenges.

The last time there was such a feeling of renewed hope and a desire for change was when Prime Minister Blair was elected.  Everyone is hoping the President Obama lives up to the expectation.

One of the changes that he could bring about is a reflection on world poverty experienced by many millions. A USA lead on Fair Trade would give the whole world a boost and, hopefully, open many people’s eyes to the situation.  I do not just mean that the USA should give hand outs to the third world but that it could agree fairer terms of trade to weaker trading nations so that poorer economies can be given a  chance to trade themselves into a better situation.

Free Trade has given a temporary wealth to rich nations but this does not seem to be lasting.  President Obama has said much about the environment and this goes hand in hand with Fair Trade.  The producers of many Fair Trade Products can offer a unique benefit to consumers by growing organically and in ways that do not harm the environment.

Fair Trade is an opportunity for President Obama to do great good for his country and the world.  It would also help USA international relationships.  Let’s hope he can find the time.
